Notary Public OCI Services
The OCI visa or card has become very popular with British Citizens (or other non-Indian citizens) of Indian origin that it merits separate discussion.
British (or other non – Indian citizens) of Indian origin often return to India frequently on business or holiday. Each time they visit India they must obtain a valid visa to enter India; the obtaining of visas is often time-consuming and inconvenient. Accordingly, many have opted to obtain the OCI Visa / card (Overseas Citizen of India) sometimes referred to as ‘the lifetime visa’ to save having to apply for a visa each time they travel to India.
India does not permit dual nationality, but will grant an OCI card to most foreign citizens, who can establish that they have Indian origin.
OCI ELIGIBILTY
A foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at anytime after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947 and his/her children and grand children, are eligible for registration as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
Minor children of such persons are also eligible for OCI. However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.
NOTARY PUBLIC ASSISTANCE
To obtain an OCI visa the Indian High Commission will request you to provide certain documents to establish your Indian origin. You will require the assistance of a Notary Public if you have difficulty producing evidence of your Indian origin (e.g. lack of birth certificates, lack of previous passports, lack of parental documents etc) or if there have been variations or omissions of your name in your personal documentation or even a change of your appearance.
In such instances, you will commonly require the assistance of the Notary Public to prepare an affidavit or statement covering the lack of documentation.
